Tyre repair safety considerations are of paramount importance as working with all tyres, and especially OTR tyres for earth-moving machinery and large agricultural tyres, is potentially dangerous due to their large size and weight, magnitude of air or gas pressures, and the presence of combustible materials. Uncontrolled release of stored energy has the potential to create serious, even fatal, consequences.

Restraining devices rated to support the weights and dimensions of tires being repaired must be used. For example, these include dedicated and certified OTR tire repair stands or block and tackle gantry arrangements for smaller tires.

Tyre Repair Safety - Maintaining an Asset Register

Tyre repair safety assessment

A risk assessment used to identify hazards and implement controlling measures to mitigate exposure to potentially dangerous situations should be carried out prior to any work commencing. For all new or unfamiliar tasks, every employees involved should first complete a Job Safety Analysis. A JSA should be incorporated into an organisation’s Risk Assessment Management system.

Tire repair assessment

In addition to the workplace safety assessment technicians should ensure that the tire repair itself is appropriate. Industry and manufacturer guidelines as well as country specific legislation should be consulted to ensure the tire is deemed repairable and once repaired will have adequate strength to resume service in its specific application.

If there is doubt regarding the reparability of any tire consult with Monaflex or the OEM, (tire or patch), prior to the commencement of any work.

PPE

Appropriate PPE should be worn at all times by all personnel in the tire repair facility.

MSDS

All tyre repair facilities must have a Material Safety Data Sheet register. The MSDS lists the hazardous ingredients of a product, the physical and chemical characteristics, its effect on human health, the chemicals with which it can adversely react, handling precautions, the types of measures that can be used to control exposure, emergency and first aid procedures, and methods to contain a spill. MSDS must be available to all personnel.

Training

All tire repair technicians should be adequately trained in safety protocols and fundamental tire repair techniques. A review of safety procedures should be conducted annually.

Correct equipment

All tyres should be restrained with appropriate devices to ensure they do not fall over during inspection or while repair processes are being carried out.
